FCRA Attorneys to take on Environmental legal fight for DeSoto County residents against railroad giant CSX

DeSoto County, Fla. – FCRA President met with DeSoto County residents at the Nocatee-Hull Creosote Site to get a first hand look at what is known historically in communities of color "environmental racism". For decades, Seaboard Railroad, Inc. of Jacksonville, now owned by CSX, discharged waste water into an unlined pit, according to a 1984 consent order filed with state agency known then as the Department of Environmental Regulation. State regulators found elevated levels of anthracene, fluroanthene, pyrene, and benzene in abandoned concrete sumps left over from the railroad tie treatment process.
Creosote: "Witch's brew" seeped into the soil and underground water wells of these residents; exposing them to health hazards. The Federal EPA, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), other government agencies and CSX must do the right thing for the Nocatee-Hull residents, and the Florida Civil Rights Association is here to make sure they are held accountable.
